Dreamland Baby’s Commitment to Safety

Dreamland Baby’s Commitment to Safety

Dreamland Baby was founded in 2019 and has helped more than 1 million families get the rest they deserve. The safety of our customers has always been, and will continue to be, our number one priority.

Dreamland Baby products were designed in collaboration with pediatricians, NICU nurses, and certified sleep consultants and reviewed by a pediatric pulmonologist for breathing safety. The gentle weight is evenly distributed from a baby’s shoulders to toes, with no concentration of weight in any one area. The sleep sacks are made of 100% cotton, which is naturally breathable and soft against a baby’s delicate skin.

When the AAP came out with its 2022 Sleep Guidelines, they stated the following:

“Weighted swaddle clothing or weighted objects within swaddles are not safe and, therefore, not recommended.”

This statement implies that there is some demonstrated evidence of a lack of safety.

However, the only study referenced by the AAP was this one (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32868588/), which indicated that weighted blankets could be used safely among a sample of 16 infants with neonatal abstinence syndrome.

The AAP and others have only theorized that our products are unsafe. They have provided no peer-reviewed, published, or scientific evidence of any kind demonstrating this product category is unsafe, has ANY connection to SIDS, or any other serious injury to babies. And we’re not the only ones who point to a lack of data. In a blog post titled “Are Weighted Sleep Sacks Safe?”, data-driven pregnancy and parenting economist Emily Oster states:

“There is nothing in the data that would suggest it is dangerous, so you’re left to weigh the theoretical concerns against the benefit to your child’s sleep.”

Over the past 10+ years, Dreamland Baby and Nested Bean combined have sold over 3.5 million weighted sleep sacks and swaddles with no pattern of hazard.

Dreamland Baby initiated a clinical trial with Indiana University in April 2024. The study is designed to assess “the safety and efficacy of weighted wearable blankets in healthy infants during overnight sleep.” We are confident this clinical trial will confirm the products’ safety and effectiveness, and we will share the results when they become available.

One point that the AAP has continued to push is the lack of efficacy of weighted products. Dreamland Baby conducts annual online customer surveys on the efficacy of our weighted products.

We received the following feedback from an online customer survey that we initiated in September 2023. We received 613 responses from customers who purchased a weighted sleep sack or swaddle:

  • 98% said it helped their little one feel calm
  • 89% said it helped their baby fall asleep faster
  • 92% said their baby stayed asleep longer

“The weighted sleep sack saved me. Literally. I was having a rough time adjusting, and no sleep didn’t help. The sack brought sleep back into my life. Total game changer!”

On Dreamland’s website alone, the sleep sacks have garnered over 7,000 five-star reviews for helping infants and parents obtain better sleep. This further demonstrates that customers are very satisfied with this product and that it is serving an important role by helping babies feel calm, fall asleep faster, and stay asleep longer.

In addition, Dreamland Baby’s weighted products are used in NICUs across the country as a non-pharmacological solution to help soothe and comfort NAS babies. To date, we have received positive online survey results from NICUs who are using our products on the most vulnerable of patients.

“The weighted swaddles that we received came in just as we had 2 of our most challenging NAS/NOW babies that we received in a long time.  The parents really appreciated them, as did the staff, because they really seemed to comfort the babies.  It’s nice to have another non-pharmacological tool in our toolbox.”

At Dreamland Baby, the safety of our customers is, and will continue to be, our number one priority. If you have any questions or seek further information, please contact us at [email protected].

In June 2022, the AAP updated its sleep guidelines and is currently not recommending weighted sleep solutions. You can read the full report here. Please note that this is not a recall. Dreamland Baby is in ongoing dialogue with the AAP regarding its stance on weighted sleepwear and hopes it will result in the statement being retracted.
